I-1 HISTORY

The history of Grant Thornton in Canada dates back to mid 1800's with strong roots in the Atlantic, central and western provinces of Canada. Through a number of partnerships and mergers we have become the fifth largest public accounting firm in Canada. More recently, on October 1, 2002, the three Alberta offices, Calgary, Edmonton and Wetaskiwin, united to form the Alberta Business Unit (ABU). It also has a long and interesting history.

Our Edmonton office has been in practice since 1909, making it the oldest Chartered Accounting Firm in Edmonton. Our Calgary and Wetaskiwin offices joined the Grant Thornton family in the early and mid 80's respectively. Since then all three offices have grown significantly both in size and in the kinds of services we provide to our clients.

I-2 SIZE, STRUCTURE AND ORGANIZATION

The Alberta Business Unit consists of the Edmonton, Calgary and Wetaskiwin offices. Although the daily operation of each office remains separate, we do work together as one business to offer a wide variety of services to our clients. These services are delivered through specialized service lines and include: Assurance and Business Advisory Services (ABAS), Tax Services, and Specialist Advisory Services. Our service-line model enables us to provide our clients with specialized advice and a higher level of expertise. This model also allows our staff the opportunity to develop specialized skills in areas that most interest them.
